As our tans start to fade it's great to look back on the fantastic summer when Mother Nature pulled out all the stops with wall to wall sunshine. Guests have filled our visitors book with tales of golden days on the lovely beaches of Angus, picnics in the glens and dolphin and puffin spotting adventures.
But now the weather has cooled thoughts are turning to indoor pursuits. We finally found time to visit our very talented neighbour's ceramic studio on Auchmithie beach. Two gorgeous life sized mermaids are the centerpiece of Mary-Ann Orr's workshop, where every shelf holds treasures from wonderfully crafted bowls and plates to beautiful mirrors. A recent landslip on the beach road, caused by a burst water pipe, unearthed some interesting finds - fisher wives' clay pipes, an old toddlers shoe and chinaware which was much prized by the fisher folk. Mary-Ann has them on display in her studio. It's a real glimpse into a bygone era.
And from a humble beach bothy to a building that's attracted world-wide attention. It would be rude not to visit the most talked about new landmark in Scotland when it's practically on your doorstep. So we headed to Dundee to soak up some culture on a much grander scale. The newly opened V&A is a sight to behold on the silvery Tay, sheltering Scott's Discovery from eastern gales, The old and new complement each other beautifully. The building itself is stunning but the opening exhibition is really something to behold. Speed and Style tells the tale of the golden age of cruising. There are some brilliant archive films, as well as fascinating displays of fashions, interior design and engineering genius.
We'll be urging all our guests to make the V&A top of their "to do" list!
